The Purameri region of the current Grama Panchayat was previously part of the Vellur Panchayat. In the "hand-raised voting" held in 1953, T.C. Rairu Kurup was elected as the President.
Through a reorganization in 1963, the Purameri Panchayat was formed, incorporating areas such as Purameri, Vilathapuram, Kuningad, Muthuvadathur, Elayadam, Perumundachery, and Aroor. P. Kunhikkelu Adiyodi was elected as the first President of the Purameri Panchayat in an election based on ballot papers.
Along with the Vadakkan Veeragatha (Northern Ballads) that praise Thacholi Othenan and Unniyarcha, the echoes of the national movement began to be heard here through Udayavarma Thampuran. E.K. Shankaravarma Raja, the former MLA of Nadapuram, was the secretary of the Kerala State Congress Conference held in Vadakara. The historic event where his daughter, Kaumudi Thampuratti, removed and donated all her gold ornaments when Mahatma Gandhi visited Vadakara in 1924 is a moment that Kerala will always remember.
The characteristic feature of the Kadathanad royal dynasty was cultural eminence, not political authority. They were generally scholars, and names like Ravivarma, Lakshmi Rani, Udayavarma, and Shankaravarma shine brightly among them.
The intensely sweet experiences of Thayambaka, Kathakali, and Bharatanatyam, along with the rhythmic waves of Chendamelam, Thirayattam, and music, contribute to the rich heritage of Purameri. A permanent branch of Kerala's largest Kathakali troupe, which operated with Kuttippuram Kovilakam as its headquarters, was located in Purameri.
The renowned Kathakali masters were Vellathadi Kadathanad Sankaran Nair, Kadathanad Ramunni Nair, the female-role expert Moleri Narayanan Namboodiri, and Ashan Kochu Govindan. It is said that the Kathakali troupes operating in Purameri and Kuttippuram were the inspiration for Mahakavi Vallathol to establish the Kerala Kalamandalam.
